New York Post: MIKE PIAZZA Is The NY METS' Resident Metalhead
July 5, 2003Billy Heller of the New York Post reports that New York Mets star catcher Mike Piazza, currently on the disabled list, is the Met who's most into music, says Vito Vitiello, a cheerful, stocky 34-year-old guy from New Hyde Park who holds sway with 50,000 watts of sound before crowds of 40,000 and more 81 times a year.
Vitiello's the man at Shea Stadium who pumps up pitcher Al Leiter before a game by blasting "The Rising", or gets the crowd on their feet for third baseman Ty Wigginton with "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It".
Right at the start of spring training, Piazza has music on his mind. He's the first to approach Vitiello. "I'll get one of those, 'Hey, dude, I've got my music in the car.' This is February and he's so prepared with it."
Piazza picked out some LED ZEPPELIN, WHITESNAKE, DEF LEPPARD, VAN HALEN. " 'Shake Your Foundation' by AC/DC is one of his favorites," Vitiello says.
Piazza, who's jammed on stage with MOTÖRHEAD and ANTHRAX, is the team's No. 1 metal-head. Vance Wilson, the catcher who's been playing since Piazza got hurt, is also into metal, but he leans toward bands like RUSH and TOOL — "not as heavy as Piazza," says Vitiello. Read more.
